Journal Entries
The goal of doing the journal entries was to analyze and summarize articles I read by experts. These articles I read shaped my knowledge of writing and my writing process. I learned skills such as minimizing writer's block, how to learn from unskilled writers, and discourse communities. In addition to learning from these articles they resembled my daily workouts I did in my dunk training. I did workouts almost every day and each week I tried to improve and I learned new things and analyzed my work. In the same way I learned from experts about my English class, I learned from reading articles from professional trainers to improve my workouts.
Rough Drafts
In my view, my rough drafts have been improved the most by things I have learned in class. Coming into the class I felt the rough draft should basically be the final draft with a few mistakes and editing needed. I now know that rough are merely my initial thoughts and every idea I have written down and do not need any type of structure at all. This really helped me because I always have an abundance of ideas when writing papers but I found myself trying to hard. This concept is similar to over training for dunking. After a lot of articles I read, rest was a significant component for improving. I was so eager to dunk that I would train hard and be too impatient and try to workout more which actually had a negative impact on my development. Rough drafts can be thought of as my unsuccessful attempts at dunking. Also they can be seen as the small goals I set on my way to my final goal. I set goals for dunking such as dunking a small sized ball or dunking on a lower rim as a way to keep improving and guiding my progress. With rough draft completing one though in your paper or for example, establishing your niche can be one small progressive goal on your way to a complete paper.
Peer Review
I gained a lot from my peers in class reviewing my papers. It helped me revise my papers because when I would read over my rough drafts I would hear my ideas and understand them and it seemed correct. My peers helped me use my ideas and helped me realize what I was missing. They also helped to make sure I covered each necessary part of my essay and to answer all questions raised by the topic I was responding to. Just like in my training, many people viewed my videos and left comments and sent messages asking me questions and giving me advice on my workouts. This was helpful because proper form is very crucial when working out to ensure I get the maximum results and also to avoid injury. When it comes to actually jumping technique is very important and getting it perfect helped me gain more inches on my vertical.
Final Drafts
In the end, all this work reviewing, editing, revising, produces a very well written final draft. All of my final drafts I have written this year in class have impressed me. Taking all these steps to edit my writings and add elements I was missing really allowed me to write to my potential. When I finally finish all the hard work and reread my final draft for the last time, I think to myself how well structured, organized and how covered all areas in their entirety. This achievement of finalizing my paper is similar to my first successful dunk. I tried over and over again put in a lot of hard work and I finally did it. Also I was able to capture it on tape and every time it I watch it I'm reminded that my hard work has paid off. Just like writing my dunking doesn't stop here, I now strive to do more difficult dunks and do different variations. Overall, comparing my writing process to my dunk training, the similarities are unmistakable. Both have goals set, and both journeys take hard work and in the end the feeling of accomplishment worth all of it.
Dunking and Final Thoughts
Dunking for me is only getting started. I want to be able to do different, more difficult dunks. Such as different tricks, dunking off an alley-oop, which is a pass or off a bounce and also do windmills and tomahawk dunks. Another type of dunk which is an ultimate goal for me is to get a dunk while in a game. I'll post my latest video of me almost getting my first dunk off the bounce at the bottom of the page, all my videos can be seen at YouTube.com/StevenDunks
For this portfolio I feel I deserve an A. I think this because not only did I display my works and explain what I learned and how I improved, but I compared this to my personal life goals, which viewers can understand and relate to themselves. I believe I showed my full understanding and grasp of the things we learned and class and was able to apply that to my life outside class as well.
