These are rough drafts of essays i wrote in class. One is about a self study I did on myself for a week to learn about my writing habits. The other is about a discourse i observed and why I thought it was a discourse community. The week long study helped me learn what times of the day I am most productive. This helped me better manage my time and also helped me while writing to keep my thoughts focused because my mind was at my most alert. The other study I did was researching the basketball courts at UCF. If you read that essay I describe the things i found while observing and asking questions during games there. Also what conclusions I made that proved this place as a discourse community and why this information is helpful. In the rough draft of this topic I did not mention the "So what?" aspect that would give my research its purpose. In the final draft I added my view of why my work is useful.

These rough drafts can be compared to my unsuccessful attempts at dunking. I can do a lot of exercises to jump higher and strengthen my legs, but i also need to attempt to actually dunk and keep trying over and over. In a rough draft you know what your goal is and you just have to start somewhere and keep trying. One thing i learned in class is to just start writing. Any ideas that come into your head just write down. At first it will be all disorganized ideas, but little by little you will edit them and your essay will start to come together. Just like dunking, when i couldn't dunk I tried over and over again, even when it became very frustrating. Also I made small intermediate goals that were a path for my main goal. Just like a rough draft you need to stay focused and stay persistent. I slowly got closer and closer by repeating these unsuccessful attempts which helped me improve my technique.
